BioOwner, founder, etc. of the Willy Wonka Candy Company. Long in the business, and having just finished a delightful day of conducting a group of children through the Factory, choosing my heir, and dealing with the fallout of a fateful meeting with his family, I awaken to find myself in a surprising situation!

Canon Notability and the Fourth Wall (see also)
Willy Wonka has appeared in many different media, including the original childrens' books, the 1971 musical, and the 2005 Tim Burton film. Due to this, I would think that any character from modern, Western culture has a decent chance of having at least heard of "Willy Wonka" in some form or other. However, those able to recognize him by face would probably be limited to characters who were well-read as children or familiar with children's literature as adults; neither Gene Wilder norMichael Jackson Johnny Depp looks very much like the Wonka described in Dahl's works, after all. The above caveats in mind, this mun has no problems with wall-breakage by your characters, whether to recognize Wonka from his own canon or misrecognize him as one of his movie incarnations.
On the other hand, Wonka's knowledge of other canons will be pretty much limited to literature pre-1972 (from whence he was taken), with a bias towards literature pre-1962 (when he shuttered his factory). Other media would be limited to things that are both pre-1962 and near-ubiquitous in American culture at the time, and even then Wonka would probably just have passing knowledge of the work in question.
